Forget rock climbing, boarding, free fall and other so-called
extreme sports, the latest craze to sweep the nation makes them all
look a bit flat - or maybe it's the other way round...
Extreme Ironing - EI - is to quote the inventors of this insanely
hazardous sport, 'an outdoor activity that combines the danger and
excitement of an 'extreme' sport with the satisfaction of a well
pressed shirt.'

The idea is to take an iron and, if possible, a board, to remote and
hazardous locations together with some crumpled clothing and, when
there, to iron them. Participants are known as 'Ironists' and are
claimed to take ' numerous safety measures, including safety ropes,
harnesses, spare irons and the like.'
Started in 1997 in Leicester by activists 'Steam' and 'Spray' the
sport now has a worldwide following and its own governing body, The
Extreme Ironing Bureau (EIB) and 'freestyle championships'.
