Weird Darren returns to the outdoor blogging fast lane after a relaxing holiday trip to Scotland...

BLOG OF THE WEEK

For the lightweight gear freaks out there this weeks blog of the week - the first ever - is LightHiker who does a comparision of twolightweight gas stoves in Two Roaring Little Beauties. Roman wins, erm, nothing, but ultra-lightweight kudos...

'In order to test their performance in still conditions I used the same test setup than the one for the alcohol stoves with no windshield and both are coming in closely which you probably wouldnít think given their big claimed difference in heat output..'

Chris at Hike Wales had his first wild camp as part of his Coast to Coast crossing of Wales in C2C Days 4 & 5 - the first wild camp

'It was the first time we had used all of the new kit in anger. Alan cheated and didn't bring everything he is going to take on the main trip and then boasted about how light his pack was. Bad man.'

Alan Sloman's LEJOG pub crawl staggers across Scotland as he completes his TGO Challenge Crossing, and is getting to ready to , and is starting to sound more like a David Lynch movie, or has he found the perfect woman? (What, again?)

'I made Tarfside for a late breakfast, then relaxed into the rest of the day off. Before too long Challengers were pouring in from the Shielin, Clova, Dinnet, Ballater and Clova; all enjoying the cameraderie of the event. Some had not seen each other for years, but their conversations picked up from where they left off last time.'

Judy Armstrong - Alpine Challenge - is well into her epic walk across the Alps.

'I strolled through the village of Les Orres and found myself caught up in a reunion, involving a barbeque and an impressive number of empty bottles, followed by an abortive mushroom hunt (if ever you encounter an awkward looking Frenchman in a forest, you have probably not interrupted a call of nature, rather he is pretending to not be looking for mushrooms, lest you should return and plunder his patch later).'

Meanwhile, over at London Backpacker's Walking Pages , George has some videos up of his recent trip on the Dales Way. They're on You Tube too, so here an example, clever stuff...

While
Aktoman has been blogging about his kit failure during his recent trip to the Cairngorm National Park

'I'm off for a 2hr drive, calling myself an idiot in as many languages as i can manage. Why didn't i take the old Akto pole in the rucksack?'

The impact of walking on mental health is discussed by John Hee in Mental Health and Walking is discussed by John Hee on his Walk About blog.

'During periods of high pressure/stress or just downright disgust at some aspects of modern life I especially take myself outdoors and walk it off. To get back to the real things in life..'

And that's all for this week folks, Weird Darren will be back with another blog summary next week.

On the front page of OM this article is called the Latest Blogging Highlights.

It does seem quite strange that a blog entry that calls a very thinly disguised OM member an aggressor and a tosser is hardly what I would call a highlight. Especially when the post goes on to say "the blogger community has managed to avoid this conflict and nastiness". This seems to be very contradictory when it appears in consecutive sentences.

I am active in the photoblogging community and have never come across these sorts of insults or negative personal comments about another person in a photoblog. Ever.

The only article I can find is "All Blogged Up" so I'll assume thats the one you mean?

It's a little strange you choose to repeat the comments. But I've yet to track down quite those specific terms despite a quick search across a few blogs.
Or perhaps you meant the comments left on them?

But as to contradiction. No. The second comment does not neccessarily contradict the first. It's just a different fact.

As to photoblogging it would be interesting to see your work, but unfortunately your profile details are private.

However if you've "never come across these sorts of insults or negative personal comments about another person in a photoblog. Ever" I hope you appreciate how tremendously lucky you seem to have been.

Forums & Blogs are very different environments. Thats why Forums have moderator.

Is your criticism of the blogger, blogging, OM or what?

John,

I'm afraid you lost me a little here. I choose to repeat the comments because it's me being attacked. The blog entry is one of the ones directly linked to from the article - in fact, here is the full quote in case you can't find it.

" .... talks about the current air of hostility that seems to be filtering some of the threads on the OM forums. Having been on the receiving end myself of one or two barbed comments (recently and in the past), and I have to say I have also given as good as I got (although this in no way justifies my behavior at the time). One of those aggressors was up until one point some one I knew and considered a friend. Luckily I now have come to my senses and consider that foamy person a complete t**ser."

It seems to me contradictory that someone can make inflammatory comments like this on a publicly read blog and then state openly that "the blogger community has managed to avoid this conflict and nastiness"

Linking to this directly from the OM front page cannot fail to cause conflict.

Is your criticism of the blogger, blogging, OM or what?
In response to this, OM is not responsible for the content of articles linked to remotely. Also as I said, I am an active photoblogger so have absolutely nothing against bloggers. But I do find it very sad that blogging, which is a fantastic resource, is reduced to personal insults.

As to our own photoblogging work, if you wish to see it I'll stick a link up later. Many regular posters here are already familiar with it. We've been running the blog for 18 months, we reply to between 20 and 40 comments daily and in that time have never received a personal insult and have never read a personal insult on any other photoblogs we visit.
