Our first Christmas Crackers gift suggestions focussed on warm
and cuddly things, but what if your outdoors
pals are already dressed to the nines in fluffy fleece and luxurious
down?
No problem, what you need is some inspirational mountain culture to
fire the imagination and set the mind wondering into the hills - and
yes, we meant 'wondering'. So here are a few mountain culture
suggestions including books, DVDs and more...

On
Sight DVD - Alastair Lee
On Sight is the
latest release from award-winning director Alastair Lee. It won two
prizes at Kendal this year, including the Grand Prize and it's
absolutely stunning visually and mentally. The film focusses on 'on
sight' climbing, tackling hard routes without any prior knowledge and
features some of Britain's top climbers not just climbing but also
talking about what climbing and on-sighting in particular means to
them. On Sight retails for £19.99.

Echo
Wall DVD - Dave MacLeod
Echo Wall tells
the story of Scottish climber Dave MacLeod's relentless mission to
climb a desperately hard rock route high on the north side of Ben
Nevis. It's a lesson in focus and quietly driven obsession set in some
of Britain's most stunning mountain scenery. It also has a fantastic
soundtrack featuring Martyn Bennett's electronic celtic music that
somehow fuses seamlessly with the footage. Breathtaking in stuff with
an intense crux. Echo Wall retails for £19.99.

Psychovertical
- Andy Kirkpatrick
We reckon this
was the best outdoors book of the year and the Boardman Tasker judges
agreed with us. It's Andy's first book and a rivetting one. There's no
self-glorification here, just a lot of hard questions about life and
climbing and some brilliant descriptive passages that climax as he
solos one of the world's most deperate aid routes, the Reticent Wall in
Yosemite. Unputdownable and a brilliant bit of writing. Price is £18.99. Full OM review.

Moveable
Feasts - Cicerone
Just out from
Cicerone, this is a cracking outdoors cook book that's a lot more than
just a shedload of backpacking-friendly recipes, though it has those as
well. Stoves, nutrition, water purification, wild food, packing and
lots, lots more. The ideal gift for anyone who camps or backpacks and
is sick and tired of just throwing dried pasta in a pan. Sweet lentil
and cashew nut curry anyone? Priced at £14.95 and
has lots of nice glossy photos of food, don't try to eat them...

Who's
Who In British Climbing - Colin Wells
One for the
climbing anorak in your life - this book should come with a warning,
once you start dipping into its 575 pages of potted autobiography, it's
all too easy to find yourself just checking out one more profile. I
mean, who exactly was Aleister Crowley? It's immensely readable and
just the ticket for a place of honour in a climbing bathroom... the
amount of reasearch that's gone into it simply beggars belief. Price is
£20, full OM review.

Colin
Prior
Colin Prior is
more like a corporation than a photographer these days, but if what you
want is a Colin Prior-type landscape then there's no escaping the fact
that he's the way to go. There's a massive selection of prints on the
site from all over the world and framed or otherwise. And of course you
can also choose from four Colin Prior calendars for 2009.
