Somewhere For The Weekend?

With not one but two extended Bank Holiday weekends coming up and more to follow, you might just be wondering where to go. There's loads of info out there, on this site and elsewhere on the web, but here, to get you started is our quick and dirty guide to the best British hill and mountain areas complete with a potted biography, the hot and not so hot-spots, a nice image from the OM Gallery to whet your appetite and a route from our Routes Section.

We've covered the obvious bases, but there are lots more to choose from - Dartmoor, the Brecon Beacons, Mid Wales, The Howgills, the far north of Scotland, Nothumberland, the North Yorks Moors and more.

For links and info on many of these, take a look at www.nationalparks.gov.uk and wander over to the relevant National Park web site where applicable. And in Scotland, we recommend the excellent Walk Highlands web site at www.walkhighlands.co.uk for routes, information and inspiration.

And if you don't want to get away, how about exploring your local hills and rights of way network, you might just be surprised by what's just around the corner from your front door.

But enough blather, check out our take on the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands.

Add Your Own Suggestions - use the forum feedback thread below to tell us what you think, add your own recommendations and ideas and we'll add the to the article as well for the benefit of everyone.

Yorkshire Dales - Gear shopping at Bernies, Inglesport or Daleswear in ingleton.

TP
Lakes - Bilbo's cafe, Ambleside. It serves good value food, cakes and drinks and its above a running / climbing gear shop! So what's not to like about that.

Or Adventure Peaks larger shop on road south out of Ambleside has a gear shop, climbing wall and cafe overlooking the wall. Not bad allround.

Howgills is quiet. Try the route from Sedbergh over Arant Haw (sp.) to the Calf and down the side of Cautley Spout. Back along the river in the valley. Sedbergh is selling itself as a booktown IIRC. They have a book festival thing on each year (or used to).
