If it's autumn then it must be lecture season and one of the highlights of this year's circuit should be Sir Chris Bonington's new 'life and times' presentation titled 'An Evening With Chris Bonington' which visits six venues in October and November.
The lecture, complete with original images and raw footage - check out the video above - covering some 60 years of his mountaineering career. What's extraordinary about Bonington is that he was arguably Britain's first ever mountaineer and his life in the mountains includes some of the seminal events of late 20th Century mountaineering. He's even featured on his own special edition Kendal Mint Cake.
On top of that, over the years he's completed no fewer than 19 Himalayan expeditions including four to Everest. The latter included a successful ascent himself with a Norwegian team, but also leadership of the extraordinary Everest SW Face project, which saw Doug Scott and Dougal Haston summit the mountain by a new route following a lengthy and meticulously planned attempt.
He's also climbed with some of the outstanding climbers of his era including the likes of Whillans, Brown, Scott, Haston, Boardman, Tasker and more, with his first ascent of the Ogre with Scott, Mo Anthoine and Clive Rowland notorious for the extraordinary epic descent which unfolded after Scott fell and broke both legs just above the ankle high on the mountain.
Bonington's an accomplished lecturer and with that sort of material to draw on, it should make for a great evening. You can find full details and book tickets at www.speakersfromtheedge.com.
