The first ascent of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay is to be the subject of a New Zealand-made 3D feature-length film called Beyond The Edge.
According to entertainment web site, stuff.co.nz, the film will focus on New Zealand national hero, Hillary and, in particular, the climb itself, with the casting director charged with finding a Kiwi actor to play the leading role.
The film reportedly has the backing of the Hillary family and will partly focus on the details of the ascent itself emphasising the relative poorness of the clothing and equipment available to the team in comparison with modern kit.
It will, says producer Matthew Metcalfe 'be breathtaking in 3D'. Intriguingly, none of the news stories we can find details where the film will be shot. It seems unlikely that it'll follow in the footsteps of The Wildest Dream, which was filmed on Everest itself with Leo Houlding and Conrad Anker playing Mallory and Irvine in period dress, but you never know...
