Epic four-day Lakes adventure race is now a qualifier for the AR World Championships.
The new
adidas
TERREX adventure race across the Lake District
has been accepted as part of the
Adventure Race World Series
in 2010, making it one of the qualifying races for the series and
attracting international teams to the four-day event.
It's the first time in four years that a British race has been part of
this series and a real feather in the cap for the organisers of the new
event which mixes a variety of disciplines in the non-stop competition
across Cumbria.
Other countries that are hosting qualifying races include – Poland,
Argentina, Portugal, Australia, Sweden, New England, Costa Rica,
Brazil, Ecuador and France. Qualifiers from each of the races are then
eligible to take part in the The World Championship Race – The Bimbache
Extrem – which is being held in
Castilla and Leon (Spain) on September 30 – October 9.
Fitting Inclusion
It's quite appropriate that one of the World Series Races should be in
the UK as at the end of 2009, for the first time ever a British Team
brought home the title of the Adventure Racing World Series from
Portugal. Team Helly Hansen Prunesco crossed the
line after five days covering a distance of nearly 900km!
Nick Gracie a member of the winning team and very experienced
Adventure Racer comments -
'I am very excited that the Adidas Terrex race has joined the Adventure
Race World Series. There is a huge Adventure Race community
in the UK and we have produced a number of strong teams over the year.
Having a world series event will help focus UK teams and
encourage more to compete on an international level.
'For visiting international teams the Lake District is the most
beautiful area of England and the race is being planned by a very
strong local racer, Bruce Duncan, who will make sure the race
is challenging but fun.'
Not Just For Elite
Athletes
Don't get the idea that the TERREX is solely aimed at hard
core, elite adventure racers. There's also a shorter course aimed at
novices and have a go heroes that's around half the length of the full
250-mile course.
