The first ever Discovery Channel World Championship Adventure Race is going to take place in the Swiss Alps in September.

The race, which is the culmination of the new seven-event series World Championships - see link to our previous story at the bottom - is, say the organisers:

'Set to be the Worlds supreme adventure competition of the year, the Discovery Channel World Championship Adventure Race will take place in Switzerland's remote alpine areas, traversing breathtaking high peaks, glaciers and mountainous terrain. Disciplines include rafting, fixed ropes, rappelling and mountain biking along with glacier and mountain trekking.'

The event starts on 3 September with the leaders expected to finish on 7 Septembe. There are a projected 50 international, high caliber teams taking part, with entries already from seven different countries. Winners of the seven events in the series automatically qualify for the final.

Discovery Channel will film the World Championship for a four-hour television mini-series, to be broadcast in early 2002.

As I'm sure we don't need to tell you, adventure racing is like making love to a beautiful woman, first you change into Lycra, then... What? Oh, sorry, adventure racing is unimaginably hard.
