It was 'madness' to go up Snowdon in winter conditions without ice axe and crampons said the coroner in an inquest into two deaths on Snowdon this February, 2009.

The BBC reports that one walker was 'well equipped' but may have slipped while reading a map, while the other didn't have the right equipment for the conditions.

Coroner Nicola Jones is reported as saying: "He fell down a sheet of ice. Had he an ice axe and crampons he may have been able to arrest his fall."
