'Scum' Beat Manslaughter Millionaire...
The admirably restrained Ramblers Association can't resist one small dig at Nicholas van Hoogstraten as the Court of Appeal rules in their favour. Nice.
Up till now the Ramblers' Association has treated convicted
millionaire felon and all round not very nice guy Nicholas van
Hoogstraten with understandable restraint despite some ridiculous
provocation, but even they couldn't resist a little dig at the latest
development in the 'blocked path' saga...
In a news story headed "Victory for 'scum'" on their web site, the
RA's Kate Ashbrook applauds the Court of Appeal's decision to overturn
East Sussex County Council's move to divert the course of a
blocked path at Hoogstraten's request. 'Scum' being one of the choice
terms the millionaire applied to the RA as it campaigned to have the
path, which runs across his lavish estate, re-opened.
'This is a victory for fighters against footpath obstructions
through the length and breadth of the country, not just a humiliation
for East Sussex County Council,' said the RA's Kate Ashbrook, who
could be forgiven for being secretly rather relieved that the millionaire is
now serving a jail term for manslaughter.
According to the RA, the court process has cost the county council
around £25,000, whereas a simple clearing of the blocled path -
obstructions include a barn, refrigeration units, padlocked gates and
a barbed-wire fence - would have set them back a mere
£4,400.
Presumably East Sussex County Council will now clear the path,
despite earlier admissions that its staff were scared witless of Van
Hoogstraten. Smells like victory then...
