Here's one to write down in your diary for next month - the Aviemore walking Festival is back for its third year and runs from 7-15 May.

Some 72 organised walks will be on offer over the nine days of the festival with three levels of walk aiming to cater for everyone. Each of the outings, led by qualified guides, is graded either strenuous, moderate or easy and is based in the Aviemore area.

That means you could hike up Ben Macudi, the second highest peak in Britain, or just take it easy strolling along by beautiful lochs or through fragrant forests, or both maybe... There's even a steam-powered option for anyone who wants to walk from Boat of Garten back to Aviemore after hitching a ride out by train.

You can find full details of Britain's longest walking festival at www.aviemorewalking.com where you can see a walks programme, registration details and further information.
