A quick heads up on the 2009 Aviemore and the Cairngorms Walking and Mountain Festival which runs from Saturday 9 May - this coming weekend - through to Friday 15 May.

It looks like being a fantastic week set mostly in the Cairngorms National Park. There's a programme of professionally guided walks, but also other activities including mountain biking, kayaking, white water rafting, climbing and canyoning all run by experienced outdoor activity operators.

On top of that, there's a full evening programme which includes talks, a Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team open night, a Ceilidh Supper and more.

And for this year the walks programme has been tweaked to include some new routes, so even if you've been to the festival before, there should be something fresh to tempt you back.

It's a brilliant time to visit the area as well with the last of the snow melting and spring bursting through all around.

The event kicks off with a pipe band opening ceremony at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore this Saturday and you can find full details along with booking forms at www.aviemorewalking.com. There's also more general information about the area at www.visitaviemore.com.
