Bank Holiday Weather
24th-26th May 2003

Our regular Friday round-up
of what's in store for the weekend. To the best of our
knowledge, there's now no general mountain-specific forecast
on the web and the Online Weather one seems to have vanished
like the early spring sunshine...
The Met
Office
outlook for Saturday gets
sunshine and showers pretty much everywhere, more sunny
intervals on the eastern side, except for the eastern side
of Scotland which is festooned with dark clouds, lightning
symbols and other representations of meteorological doom.
Temps between about 11 and 14C - so cool - winds from the
west and moderate.
Sunday looks slightly better, but
still unsettled with sunny intervals and showers, more rain
north of the border if the map is correct.
The BBC
Weather site uses Met Office
data, but is generally easier to follow.

Saturday rain in SE clearing in
the morning, everywhere gets sunny intervals and showers,
some heavy. Yuk.
Sunday surviving showers in north
and east clearing away, everywhere then mostly dry with
sunny spells, warmer inland, cooler on the coast.
Monday still unsettled, showers in
the NW, drier elsewhere, cloudy.
Check BBC's specific areas:
Fort
William / Kendal
/ Betws-y-Coed
/ Aviemore
/ Skipton
/ Glossop
(Peak) / Brecon
/ Milton
Keynes. Eastern Scotland looks
the best bet if you want to stay dry...
Saturday's
general forecast from Online
Weather - still 26C in Beijing - in the UK mostly cloudy with
showers or drizzle, winds from west, mostly moderate but
fresh to strong winds possible in some western areas.
Sunday
- it says the unsettled weather will be coming to an end
with some sunshine breaking through and just a few showers
over northern English hills.
Bank
holiday Monday dry with
sunshine in England and Wales, it says here, with
temperatures in the afternoon reaching high teens / low 20s.
Scotland and Northern Ireland though, get brushed by a
passing cold front with cloud and the odd shower.
Scotland
Online Mountain Weather - Handy
specialist mountain forecasts for Scottish east and west
Highland areas and, strangely, Snowdonia and the Lake
District. Well worth a look.

Wasdale
weather - daily reports updated
before 10 am, a local forecast and a current pic - always
worth a loook just for the piccy. - from OM member Guy
Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Straight from the
horse's mouth. Drear and damp today, unsettled over the bank
holiday weekend.
Scottish
Avalanche Information Service -
closed for the season, roll on next winter :-)

OUTDOORSmagic
web cam page Links to all the UK
mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've
missed, please drop
us a line and we'll add it to the
page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow
situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's
anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're
viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down. Ho
hum...
Showers rather than storms and improving, maybe...
Is this May or March?
Verdict Well, it's a bank holiday
weekend, what did you expect? Generally things look
unsettled, with some sunshine and showers. If you believe
Online Weather, things are improving, but in any case it's
more showers that serious deluge stuff. May feel fresh on
the tops mind, esepcially on Saturday, so don't forget your
shell clothing.
Craven Disclaimer Hey come on,
we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the
above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather
may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate
their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top
than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different
from down in the valleys.
