A quick heads up on a new BBC five-parter called Mountain
which kicks off on Sunday 29 July and is presented by Griff Rhys
Jones.
The
series is billed as an 'exploration of Britain's mountains' and
begins with a look at the northwest highlands of Scotland and the
Isle of Skye. Over the course of the series, Rhys Jones travels down
to Dartmoor passing through many of Britain's roughest landscapes
and meeting the people who live there from crofters to aristocrats
via posties and MRTs.
In the first episode, he apparently makes an ascent of Ben Hope on
the Kyle of Tongue with TGO editor and broadcaster Cameron McNeish,
something of a 'baptism of fire'.
According to the company which made the series:
'For the viewer this will be visually sumptuous; for Griff Rhys
Jones it will be a physical, mental and emotional challenge. A novice
hill walker and climber, we will witness him scrambling down scree
and negotiating a perilous ridge.
'He spends the night in bothies and snow holes, braves the wind
and snow, and hopefully tackles the most difficult ascent in the
country - the infamous Inaccessible Pinnacle of the Cuillin Hills in
Skye.'
We predict much satisfying gibbering ;-)
The first 60-minute episode screens at 9.00 pm on Sunday 29
July on BBC1. More details at www.bbc.co.uk.
The series is also accompanied by a book 'Mountain - Exploring
Britain's High Places' by Rhys Jones which is published by Penguin.

This looks worthy of a watch. The trailers make it look very tempting so I've already staked my claim. Nice to see so many places I know in them too. This Sunday (29/07) is Northern Scotland. I've never walked North of the border so maybe it'll show me what I'm missing. I've got a week in Skye next year so I'll take extra interest in that part of the programme.

More details and piccies here - http://www.grough.co.uk/content/view/509/2/ The last picture looks suspiciously like the Cuillin, although the patch of grass doesn't tally. (there is grass at the top of Sgurr nan Gillean but the view behind doesn't look right).
