An interesting snippet from the jewel of publishing that is the
Glossop Chronicle...
The family of the late Benny Rothman, one of the main leaders of
the historic 1932 Kinder Trespass, has presented his rucksac to
Glossop where it will live in the local mountain rescue team HQ.
Benny was best known for the rousing speech he made at the Bowden
Bridge quarry - now a car park - and, afterwards for his book about
the protest. The Trespass, when hundreds of walkers defied police and
gamekeepers to walk onto the Kinder Plateau, was the first shot in the
battle to win access rights.
A dedicated socialist, he was imprisoned for his part in the
Trespass, and went on to campaign widely for issues he believed
in.
Handing over the pack, his grandson Paul Thilo said: "Benny loved
the moors around Glossop. My family can think of no better tribute
than to donate this memorial to the rescue team that protects walkers
and climbers in the area that Benny so enjoyed and [where he]
felt so much freedom."
