Berghaus Climbers Walk With Meeja Luvvies
Houlding, Hinkes and Bonington star in a Grauniad Satruday supplenemt aimed at encouraging 'urbanites' onto the winter hills

Berghaus-sponsored climbers Chris Bonington, Alan Hinkes and Leo
Houlding have been hard at work yomping up hills with the meeja.
Saturday's Guardian newspaper included a 'Winter Wonderland'
supplement sub-titled 'How urbanites can enjoy country walking - even
when it's cold'. Is it just us, or does that sounds a bit negative,
you know, like 'How urbanites can enjoy porridge - even when it's
served without sugar'? Aren't urbanites fossils anyway?
But hey. It's not aimed at the likes of you lot. Most entertaining
was reading an account by Emma Brockes of ascending Crib Goch with
Leo Houlding and, in particular, Leo's dry comment: 'I've never done
this walk, but we may die'.
Bonington, meanwhile, strolled along the northern fells with Merope
Mills and good old Hinkesy returned to his first hilly love,
Roseberry Topping, where he characteristically asks if the pies are
'local pies'. Alan's well know for his love of local produce.
Okay, so some of the accompanying gear advice may be a bit basic,
but it's great to see Berghaus and co-sponsors Blacks making the
effort to bring walking to the unconverted pinko lefty,
Guardian-reading, London village masses...
Unfortunately the supplement doesn't seem to have made the
Grauniad website, so you'll just have to take our word for it.
