At Berghaus's 2010
gear preview, we couldn't help noticing that the
staff on the stand were wearing retro-styled Everest 85 tee-shirts, so
we asked what was going on. Turns out that 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Chris
Bonington's ascent of Everest with a Norwegian expedition.
Not only that, Bonington - arguably Britain's best known mountaineer
and the public face of mountaineering - is also 75 years old and going
strong. Not only that, it's also 60 years since the first ascent of an
8,000-metre peak, when a French expedition led by Maurice Herzog first
climbed Annapurna and some 50 years since Bonington himself climbed
that mountain.
To commemorate the various anniveraries, Sir Chris will be leading a
trek in the Annapurna region with his son's trekking company and, as we
understand it, Berghaus will be producing various commemorative tees. A
little slice of history in fact.
