It's back to 1986 with exact reproductions of classic Berghaus jackets and packs launched.
They've been keeping strangely quiet about it, but
Berghaus appears to
have a new
1980s
Heritage Range in the wings with exact reproductions of
classic 1986 shell jackets and packs about to be re-issued in their
original form.
The whole range of two jackets and a technical pack is detailed on its
own microsite complete with potted histories of each of the items in
the range and trust us, it's going to ring some bells with more mature
OM members.
Perhaps the most recognisable jacket in the range is the
Trango Extrem, a
staple in the wardrobe of pretty much all serious 1980s mountaineers
and instantly recognisable from the big yellow rectangle in the centre
of the back. As worn in Touching The Void, the actual events and the
film.
The jacket was designed for the British K2 expedition in 1986 and named
after the Trango Towers which are passed en route for the mountain.
It's made from 3-layer Gore-Tex Ultra TZ fabric - great name eh - has a
big helmet hood with wired peak, five whopping zipped pockets and
compared to modern shells, feels to be built like a tank. We have a
vague idea that it weighed around a kilo, in fact there's still one
lurking somewhere in the attic...
Other items in the Heritage Range include the Trango in red rather than
blue and two versions of the Tornado Jacket. Finally there's a Rock
Star pack to carry your Moacs and Clog Cogs around in...
There's even an endorsement from Sir Chris Bonington: "They were great
- looked good, were revolutionary and most important of all, were
really good bits of kit."
