BMC Announces Crag Care Fund

It's like a makeover for your neglected, scruffy, local climbing crag...

The BMC has established a £10,000 Crag Care Fund to support the care and maintenance of crags in England and Wales.

Half the funding will go towards essential work at BMC owned and managed crags like Horseshoe Quarry, Craig y Longridge, Bwlch y Moch with the other £5,000 earmarked for other projects throughout England and Wales.

The emphasis is on practical work including rock repair work, ground erosion control, other vegtation management work, like funding tree surgeons, crag clean-up days and funding BMC Area and club 'Adopt a Crag' initiatives.

Think of it as gardening for crags... look how High Rocks was transformed with a bit of maintenance. Now all those scruffy shrubs and herbaceous borders have been removed leaving just nice clean rock to go climbing on.

Dave Turnbull Chief Executive of the BMC said: "There's a lot of enthusiasm amongst climbers to help protect and revitalise their local crags. Over the last few years, there have been many initiatives at local level to reverse the 'decline' of various crags. This work at grassroots level, supported by the BMC, has been very positive.

"The Crag Care Fund secures funding to support these good works. We've made it simple for clubs and individual climbers to get involved without being out of pocket, so we look forward to hearing your ideas for practical work to care for our crags."

BMC members, Area Committees and affilliated clubs can apply to the BMC for money for relevant projects, but the fund does not support the cost of fixed equipment like lower-offs and bolts.
