Hill walkingThe British Mountaineering Council is set to run a series of talks about hill walking, both for seasoned walkers and enthusiastic novices, in January and February 2007. The programme follows the annual series of winter and Alpine talks which attracted 1300 people this year. Topics covered will include navigation, weather, route finding, scrambling, use of GPS, and an overview of different walking areas. Oh yes, and plenty of anecdotes:-)

The speakers are Helen Barnard, from the Mountain Training Trust, and Ian Brodie, from Friends of the Lake District. As you'd expect, both have broad experience of hill walking in the UK. Helen's also keen on high altitude trekking and will be offering tips on health and altitude related issues for anyone planning expeditions abroad.

The speakers will be touring the country and you can catch them at the following places/times:

  • Monday 29th January - University of Liverpool
  • Tuesday 30th January - University of Wales, Bangor
  • Wednesday 31st January - Aylestone School, Hereford
  • Monday 5th February - University of College, London
  • Tuesday 6th February - University of Leeds
  • Wednesday 7th February - University of Central Lancashire, Penrith

All lectures start at 18:45 and finish at 21:00 at a cost of £7 per person, or £5 with a BMC membership card, and you can buy tickets on the door. Group discounts are also available. More details from the BMC or by emailing office@thebmc.co.uk.

Great news that the BMC have decided to hold one of their lectures in North Wales, Ok - Bangor; but close enough ;-))

Makes a change from having to go to Liverpool or Manchester for this sort of thing, which is too impractical.

Thumbs up to the BMC.
