New light on Sir Chris Bonington's recent climbing trip to the
Arganglas area of NW India from the Times of India.
In an interview with two of the local climbers involved in the
expedition, the paper reveals details until now hidden from the wider
world despite the wonders of the satellite phone. The wonders of
modern technology were used not just to update Bonington's
web site with the latest information and pictures from the
expedition, but for more prosaic purposes.
'When the Scotch ran out at base camp we could inform Motup
Chawang in Leh who was in charge of all our arrangements to bring on
the beers,' reported civil engineer Cyrus Shroff, who was
unsurprisingly all in favour of satellite communication...
Shocking stuff and if anyone's buying, mine's a pint of
Boningtons...
On the climbing front, the expedition was notable for a serious
first ascent of the Argan Eiger (6218 metres) by Mark Richey and Mark
Wilford which turned into an epic when they descended by an
alternative route that turned into a terrifying gorge descent . Epic.
See the report
on the Bonington site.
Sir Chris summarises the expedition thus: 'It has been a superb
expedition with everyone getting on really well together, one major
first ascent of the Argan Eiger by Mark Richey and Mark Wilford, two
other first ascents by Divyesh Muni, Cyrus Schroff, Satya Dam and
Vrijendra Lingwal. Harish Kapadia has explored the Rassa Glacier. Jim
Lowther and I have done an awful lot of walking and reached the head
of the Phunangma Glacier.'
