Bonington On Mint Cake

Quite literally as it turns out. Check out this special edition block of sugar and syrup...

We were highly amused by this special Kendal Mint Cake that snuck into our pack lunch at this week's Berghaus press event in the Lake District.

Chris Bonington Kendal Mint Cake

Inside it's the same old sugar, glucose syrup, water and peppermint oil cake - though we reckon 'cake' here is stretching credibility somewhat - but on the front is none other than mountaineering legend, Sir Chris Bonington.

Unfortunately we missed our chance of snapping Sir Chris eating his own personalised mint cake, because we didn't spot it till after the event, but there you go. One bar, two outdoor icons...

I haven't had Kendal MintCake for years as I usually take museli bars with me.

I will have to get down to Oswald Bailey and see if they still sell it

Never believed in it for much myself until one day in Scotland when we ran out of decent water and food and all I had was a small block of Kendal Mint Kate wrapepd up in cling film I'd had for a year as emergency food, it made such a difference to that day getting that final energy kick up the bum we needed! Always cary two 40g bars just in case now.

'On the summit of Everest we drank beefy Bovril!' - Advert circa mid nineteeen-seventies, featuring Chris Bonnington on tv after the successsful Everest climb. Out of camera shot, second sentence....'As we had to get rid of the taste of that Kendal Mint Cake somehow!'
