New
for 2002 - and at long last - is a British Adventure Racing
Championships run by the organiser of the fearsome Adrenalin Rush,
Brian Elliott.
Elliott says: '"The creation of the British Championship series
will unify the sport under a single platform, but without losing any
of the variety or expertise provided by existing events. Racers can
compete in established events, professionally organised by people
they already know and trust. This is a big step forward for adventure
racing in the UK. We can now work together for the betterment of the
sport in general."
The move is a logical progression, with the popularity of
adventure racing growing all the time, and is aimed at finding the
'best adventure racing team in Britain' through a one-off event which
will be held in late September.
Qualification for the Britis Championship Adventure Race will be
through five designated qualifying events for teams of three or
four:
|
1.
|
Quest Adventure.....13th - 14 April - England
|
|
2.
|
Hebridean Challenge.6th - 10th May - Outer Hebrides
|
|
3.
|
Blue Eskimo.........29th - 30th June - Scotland
|
|
4.
|
Ace Races...........27th - 28th July - England
|
|
5.
|
Salomon X-Adventure.7th - 8th Sept - Scotland
|
The final itself will take place between 28 September and 2 October
at a venue which has not yet been announced. The winners of each
qualifying event will be offered free and guaranteed entry to the
final with the second and third finishers also being invited to
compete. The remainder of the 50 four-person-team field will be made
up by experienced teams meeting 'certain criteria'.
The series will be filmed by Dream Team TV for broadcast and full
details of the event will be released on 1 March.
