The BBC is reporting that Bristol University student Jake Meyer, 22, has set a new record for scaling each of the highest peaks in 48 US states.

Meyer, previously the youngest climber to complete the Seven Summits, beat the previous record by six days completing the whole round in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes.

The BBC quotes him saying he feels on top of the world, though he does apologise for being naff...

Hot on the heels of Annabelle Bond being given an OBE for being dragged up, sorry climbing with guides, the Seven Summits I see that 'Everest Hero' (copyright Standard Life) Jake Meyer has completed this US challenge.

It seems that Britain's over privileged youth are taking over the world!

I am a bit baffled by his challenge though, and more specifially what the point of it is. From what I have read it appears to be the uber environmental vandal's equivalent of the 3 Peaks.

I dare say it raised money for charity, but I am sure a young man with his connections could have raised a fair bit for charity just by sitting in a bath of beans or something without getting my pension provider to foot the bill for him and his pals to get their hi-NRG kicks.

Anyway, I for one am not impressed. I prefer my mountaineers to be working class Northerners! (I am including Doug Scott as an honorary Northerner for the purposes of my argument

It involved 13,000 miles of driving apparently.

If anyone's interested then there is a web chat on the Standard Life site involved that other phoney / Everest Hero Bear Grylls billed as

'Jake Meyer joins adventurer Bear Grylls and Ashley Ramsay from Standard Life Bank to give advice on how you can shake up your life and finance your own life-changing adventure'

Sounds fascinating
