Congratulations to Mike Robertson and guidebook publishers
Rockfax who have landed a top award at the 2007 Banff
Mountain Book Festival.
Deep
Water, Mike's guide to deep-water soloing around the world won
the Mountain Exposition prize at the festival and is a guide to deep
water soloing on the sea cliffs of the UK, Spain, Portugal and
elsewhere.
Deep water soloing, in case you didn't know, involves solo
climbing sea cliffs generally above deep water, so falling off means
a bit of a dunking rather than a spell in hospital.
It's become something of an obsession for Mike who admits 'Deep
water. for me, is more than just a guidebook.
'Deep water soloing is now seen as a lifestyle and even a genre.
The roots of the book go right back to 1992 and my first tentative
solos at Dorset's Connor Cove...'
The book, he says, is the natural culmination of his progresson
from writing about the spot, to photographing it then moving on to
explore DWS in the Mediteranean area.
The award's also a recognition of the overall quality of the
excellent Rockfax guides with their clear, easy to follow layout,
diagrams and photography. Interestingly, another of the seven
finalists was the BMC's new guide to Stanage, underlining the overall
quality of British climbing guidebooks.
