Cairngorm Park Boundaries Stay The Same

Proposals to extend the boundaries of the Cairngorm National Park have been squished.

Plans to extend the Cairngorm National Park into Perthshire have failed for now after members of Holyrood's environment committee voted against the planned extension of the souther border of the park.

More positively, the committee has recommended that the boundary is reconsidered as part of a wider five-year review of the park next year, so the boundary may yet be extended.

The bill for the boundary change was introduced by MSP John Swinney to include the town of Blair Atholl and the Spittal of Glenshee with one of the main arguments being that the current boundaries split two major mountains in two.

More details from the BBC news at news.bbc.co.uk and more general information about the park at the park authority web site www.cairngorms.co.uk

Thank you for reporting this but please can we get the name of the park correct! It is the Cairngorms (with an 's') National Park. Cairn Gorm is and will remain a single hill near the centre of the UK's largest national park. Like the Snowdonia National Park rather than the Snowdon National Park.

As you imply any decision on the boundaries of any Scottish National Park is a matter for the Scottish Parliament. The Cairngorms National Park Authority will work with whatever area is included in the Park and as now, will endeavour to work across boundaries as appropriate to ensure linkages are made with immediate neighbouring areas.
