It’s a big week for the folks at the helm of the UK’s largest national park this week as the Cairngorms park is assessed for a potential prestigious gong: the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.
The charter is, as its name suggests, recognises high standards in promoting the sustainable development and management of tourism and, if successful, the Cairngorms will be the first national park in the UK to receive the award.
Award organizers, Europarc, cover over 500 protected areas across 37 countries and accept applications for the charter from any park or protected area, but the requirements for success are stringent, including - crucially - satisfying the assessor from the Europarc Federation visiting this week.
Winning the charter would help put the Cairngorms on the European tourism map and acknowledge some of the UK efforts to manage tourism responsibly, so good luck to ‘em.
