Car Charges For Langdale?

New proposals suggest a £5 per car entry fee to the popular but overwhelmed Great Langdale Valley in the Lakes. What's it all about?

Car drivers would have to pay a daily £5.00 fee to enter the Langdale valley in the Lakes if proposals by a research group at the University of Central Lancashire at Preston were put into action.

The scheme would mean that any provate vehicle passing through Skelwith Bridge and up to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel between 9 am and 4 pm from March to October would have to pay up and display a valid sticker or face prosecution from wardens. The alternative would be to park in Ambleside (hahahha...) and use public transport.

Fine walking above Langdale - £5.00 entry please...

Apparently the proposals are currently just 'a research project to check out the reaction to, and feasibility of, such a scheme' and there are numerous potential problems. For a more in depth look at what's going on and some specific points, check out Jeannie Conley's informative original article here, which also includes contact details for reactions to the scheme.

The proposals have echoes of the controversial Snowdonia Green Card scheme and, as in North Wales, we would expect concerted opposition from businesses based in Langdale including three camp sites and a number of pubs, many of which rely on walkers and climbers as well as tourists for their trade.

Meanwhile in the Peak District, a project to charge cars for entry to the Upper Derwent Valley on Bank Holidays and summer Sundays seems to be going ahead.

Here we go again, firstly, is the length of road from Skelwith Bridge to Langdale a public highway?, if so, anyone who's vehicle has a tax disc, has already paid to use this road, this scheme is, in effect, introducing toll roads to The Lakes, I would be interested to see what the lawyers will make of that!
I would like to know what problem is likely to be solved by this, or are they just trying to discourage car use?, if so, they should FIRST give us a realistic alternative, if it's to be in the form of a park and ride, where is the large carpark going to be, and how often will the buses run?, I would be happy to use public transport but it needs to be a viable alternative

Already sent an email to the people making the proposals...Jeannie put a contact email address in her article...I suggest everyone uses it to let these idiots know what a stupid idea it is.
