Just in case you've been living in a mass media free bubble, a team of celebrities
has successfully summited Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, raising
over £1.5 million so far for Comic Relief in the
process.
The team, including Alesha, Cheryl Cole, Chris Moyles, Denise Van
Outen, Fearne Cotton, Gary Barlow and Ronan Keating took five days to
climb the mountain, which is renowned for altitude-related problems due
to the classically truncated itinineraries followed by most parties.
The celebs found the whole experience intensely hard and painful, with
reports saying that singer Alesha Dixon 'crawled her way to the summit'
and was in 'considerable pain'. Cheryl Cole and Fearne Cotton
reportedly suffered serious altitude-related symptoms and were injected
by medics after collapsing.
While not quite the Everest-style epic that the popular media are
implying, the ascent of Kili is still pretty tough thanks to the short
itinerary and rapid height gain and it's all in a good cause.
You can see a programme
about the climb on Thursday
12 March at 8pm
on BBC1.
