Chinese climbers have lit the Olympic flame on the summit of the world's highest mountain.

The Chinese have succeeded in their mission of carrying the Olympic torch to the summit of Everest and don't we know it...

The specially-designed, altitude-friendly torch, a sort of subsidiary twin of the main torch, was lit on the summit of the world's highest mountain on live television today, Thursday.

The final torch bearer was a Tibetan woman, Cering Wangmo who was part of a team comprising both ethnic Tibetans and Han Chinese. Whatever you think of China's human rights record, its policy towards Tibet and the security surrounding the ascent of Everest, it's still a pretty extraordinary achievement.

Publicity? Propaganda? Call it whatever you want. For an alternative view see www.freetibet.org

I note today on Radio four, that the team of torch 'security officials' till now said to have been Chinese Beijing Police officers, are now revealed to be Chinese People's Army paramilitaries chaps!
