Christmas Day On Helvellyn
It's just another day for felltop assessor Jon Bennett, but with added tinsel :-)

One mountaineer who'll be out on Christmas Day come hell or
high water, or maybe that should be Helvellyn or High Street - ahem -
is the newest Lake District Weatherline fell top assessor, Jon
Bennett.
Weatherline's most recent recruit, ex-catering industry man Jon, will spend Christmas morning
stomping up 950 metres of prime Lakeland mountain to check conditions
on top of Helvellyn for the Lake District National Park's 33-year-old
weather information service.

If you spot this man on Christmas Day stop him! He may have mince
pies in his pack...
Not that Jon - above - is remotely dismayed at the prospect:
"I can't think of a better way of spending Christmas Day,' he
says. 'I'll be in my favourite place, doing a job I love and helping
a lot of people into the bargain."
He'll be properly equipped too...
"There could be some tinsel on my rucksack and tucked up inside a
slab of Christmas cake and maybe a couple of mince pies. I'd like to
think there'll be a few people about, taking advantage of a quiet
time on Helvellyn,
Jon shares the job on alternate weeks with fellow fell top
assessor, former Marine Commando and his Christmas Day mission is a
tacit acknowledgement that quite a few keen walkers and climbers will
be out on the hill over the holidays.
You can get the latest Lakes conditions from Weatherline on 08700

This year we stayed at Mirefoot Cottages for christmas. It was a fantastic base to start our walking holiday and altough we didn't make it to the top of Helvelyn on Christmas day, we did enjoy many walks over the week. If you are interesed they have a website at www.mirefoot.co.uk.
