The new Climb
Newcastle dedicated bouldering centre opened its
doors to the public this Thursday
23 October in Byker, just outside the city centre.
The Climb Newcastle team of local climbers former British Champion and
World Cup winner Andy Earl, Chris Graham and Darren Stevenson have
transformed a derelict swimming pool into Newcastle's first bouldering
centre. They've put a huge amount of time and effort into converting
the three-storey building and making it watertight again.
Before...
The idea is that the centre will cater for all levels of climber from
beginners and kids through to international-level rock athletes with a
comprehensive coaching structure overseen by Andy Earl.
Inside there's a two-level main room with a variety of angles and
surfaces complete with colour-coded circuits and bouldering problems as
well as some easier-angled stuff suitable for beginners. There's also a
coaching room aimed at kids and beginners with lower problems and six
different angles to play with plus a steep cellar cave area and a
training room.
Once you're done tearing
your tendons to bits, there's a lounge to relax in, a shop and changing
facilities.
Looks awesome from the pics and impressively the whole project has been
privately funded and strongly backed by the local climbing community.
The centre's open from 12.00 till 22.00 on weekdays and 10.00 till
20.00 at weekends. There are full details on the Climb Newcastle web
site at www.climbnewcastle.com
but admission is £6.50 adult, £4.50 for under 16s,
but you can also buy a 3-month or 12-month pass for £140 or
£380 respectively.
