Climbers Fart Uncontrollably At Altitude Shocker

Wind resistance takes on a new significance as experts reveal the last great problem of high altitude mountaineering. Blazing Saddles bean feast anyone?

It's official and it even has an official medical name - climbers fart uncontrollably at high altitudes and the condition is fetchingly called High Altitude Flatus Expulsion.

Always keep your distance, especially when following...

The Independent, quoting from the journal, High Altitude Medicine and Biology, reveals that the condition kicks in at altitudes above 11,000 feet (3400 metres). Apparently as air pressure drops externally, there is less resistance to the expulsion of gases and uncontrollable flatulence results.

Clearly it makes sense to avoid baked beans and similar foods when climbing at high altitude, as well as keeping a decent amount of rope between yourself and fellow climbers. Other considerations might be the breathability and windproofness of shell garments.

HAFE, we reckon, could be a major risk at altitude, which is why OUTDOORSmagic is now urgently seeking funding to research the problem in the Andes this summer, send your cheques to the 'Anti-Social Climbers Expedition' c/o the site.

Apparently some farts can be quite pleasant. Not my opinion I might add, I was told this by a vegetarian of all people. OK I grant you your own odour isn't that offensive to yourself while others are gagging away alongside you.

Quite pleasant, I THINK NOT.

What do you lot think?

I totally disagree. Some of my very own (vegetarian) farts are rank, and would curdle milk.

Generally, the act of farting can be a relief, but to be honest, it's not that nice, particularly if you've been on the Old Peculiar the night before and confidence is, as they say, low.

I agree with Alex. I'm on the old health kick at the moment eating more fruit, veg, homemade soups, fibre etc etc and my farts are making my eyes bleed. Its a good thing I have an office to myself and yes the windows are wide open.
