Coalition Welcomes Quarry Decision
Court decison welcome, but destruction continues at Peak District quarry.

The Longstone Edge Coalition says the recent Appeal
Court decision allowing an appeal against the quarrying at
Backdake could not only 'prevent quarrying destruction there' but
also 'help resolve other problematic old mineral permissions which
threaten valued countryside'.
The Court ruled this week that the Peak District National Park
Authority and the Government can appeal against continued quarrying
at the site in the Peak District, which is currently allowed under
outmoded mineral extraction rights.
Though the quarrying has been halted once already, the High Court
ruled in March that quarrying could continue on the site, however
Lord Justice Keene agreed with the arguments that the appeal should
proceed because of its wider importance to the minerals industry and
the significant impact on the amenity of the national park.
Decision Welcomed
The Coaltion has welcomed the decision with David Murray,
Campaigner for the Ramblers' Association saying:
"The Ramblers' Association is very happy with this decision to
enable thorough scrutiny of this issue in the Courts; we are also
very pleased to see the Court of Appeal recognise the amenity of the
National Park.
"Removing large parts of this much loved landscape also removes
the public's right to enjoy its otherwise tranquil, wonderful views.
The coalition supports the National Park Authority and Government in
their efforts to highlight the need for a quick resolution".
Destruction Continues
Unfortunately, during the time leading up to the appeal, quarrying
can continue at Backdale leading to calls for the Government to step
in with a rescue package to prevent further destruction of the
landscape.
John Lambert of the Save Longstone Edge Group commented:
"The destruction of Longstone Edge continues day-by-day, and this
week's judgment will not stop the destruction. Hilary Benn has
recently said that he appreciates the urgency of finding a long term
solution to the problem. He must be prepared to take urgent steps to
save Longstone Edge, and show his willingness to give 100% support to
the National Park with actions, not just words".

Whilst I applaud the action in general, lord knows there's far too much quarrying around the Peaks, which makes a mockery of National Park status imho, what would the Park Authority do with Backdale if it was permanently closed? Anyone who's been up there recently will know it's a bloody big hole in the ground, so should it be left for nature to take over? Maybe it would become a new climbing hot-spot or landfill! Have any of the groups involved with this appeal given details of what future they see for Backdale?
