The Open University is encouraging people to get out and walk the
coast as part of the publicity around the new BBC series Coast
which kicked off last week.
As we
told you last week, there are 39 walk guides on the series
website, but at six Portsmouth, Caernarfon, Belfast, Glasgow, Whitby
and Great Yarmouth, the OU and the BBC will be holding special
coastal walk events.
Each event will be supported by an OU scientist and depending on
the particular coastline will include activities that investigate
examples of coastal rocks and wildlife. The rock activities will
focus on the geology of our coast, and include a 'rock of the
day' and an exhibition that explains the formation of some of our
typical coastal rocks.
The wildlife activity will focus on marine molluscs in a tank of
seawater and will also demonstrate simple non-damaging techniques for
investigating life on our seashores. In addition an OU specialist
will be able to advise on the activities provided in a 'Discover your
Coast' activity pack.
There will also be multi-media displays constructed from old
seaside postcards and photos showing how the coastline has changed
and the public will be asked to bring their own potos along.
If you want to go to one of the events, you need to register using
