OUTDOORSmagic member Conan Harrod is going to be giving a
public talk about his successful Everest expedition in
Manchester later this month with all proceeds going to Christies
Against Cancer.
Conan successfully climbed the mountain this spring - above - but
an earlier attempt - in his words - 'turned into an epic beyond the
imagination' after an American climber above him slipped and
catapulted him down the North Face of the mountain.
Even worse, he had a compound fracture to his left leg and was at
an altitude of 8600 metres. When one of Conan's team-mates arrived on
the scene, the American abandoned him to his own devices.
It's generally accepted that any serious injury high on Everest is
fatal since a rescue at this altitude is deemed to be near
impossible, so how did Conan survive and return to climb the mountain
three years later?
You can find out and see dramatic photos from both expeditions on
Wednesday 22 November at 7.30pm. Venue is Lecture
Theatre A, Roscoe Building, University of Manchester, Brunswick
Street (Off Oxford Road), Manchester.
Proceeds from the talk go to Christies Against Cancer, the charity
Conan has already raised £3000 for. You can order tickets in
advance by e-mail
or there should be plenty available on the day.
