A new date for your diary with the launch of the Coniston
Walking Festival on 28-30 September, plus if you're one of
the first 50 to book tickets, you'll get a free pair of Bridgedale
Endurance socks courtesy of event sponsors, Bridgedale.
Located further west than the hotspots of Ambleside and Windemere,
Consiston still has a relatively calm, relaxed feel to it as well as a beautiful
location by Coniston Water and overlooked by the Old Man.
The festival, at the end of September, mixes guided, themed walks
around some of the stunning local mountain scenery and more cultural
activities. There's a 'walking theatre' event for example, with a
play commissioned specially for the festival and set in the grounds
of Ruskin's lakeside house, Brantwood.
Then there are films from the Kendal Mountain Film Festival
Tour, the chance to go gorge scrambling, lectures from the likes
of Simon Yates and on both Friday and Saturday night, organised pub
crawls around Coniston with organised entertainment.
We like the idea of the 5.00 am start 'Sunrise Walk and
Breakfast', a stomp up to the summit of Coniston Old Man to watch the
sun rise, plus a cooked breakfast.
Lots more besides too and you can find full details and booking
information on the festival web site at www.conistonwalkingfestival.org.
Best be quick if you want to land some free socks...
