One for the running diary with the news that geordie running legend Steve Cram is launching a brand new, mostly off-road marathon around Kielder Water, dubbed 'Britain's Most Beautiful Marathon'.

Steve Cram runnning at Kielder

Scheduled for 17 October, 2010, the new marathon follows an almost completely off-road course around northern Europe's largest man-made lake in the heart of Northumberland in NE England.

The race follows the newly-completed Lakeside Way, which stretches right around the shoreline of Kielder Water and should be stunning. For the first year, Cram and his team of organisers have limited entries to 1,000 runners and expect to attract entries from all over the world.

Cram lives nearby and comments:  “Kielder Water & Forest Park is my favourite place to run in the world and with the water’s shoreline being 26 miles long it’s an ideal venue for the ultimate running challenge, the marathon.  Most of the course is off-road and it offers a wonderful test for trail runners, adventure racers and marathon enthusiasts alike.

“Add to that the stunning setting, with a wonderful new view at every twist and turn, and I think that this is quickly going to establish a reputation as the most beautiful marathon in Britain.”

Looks 'interesting' - we're already entered for this year's Montane Kielder 100 mountain bike race and there's an attractive, if slightly daunting, attraction to attempting a marathon at the same location.

Hi Peter on the video it says that 2010 event is in September I thought that this years event was on 17th October?

Hi Joyce.  They're different events. The marathon that Steve Cram launched this week is definitely on 17th October.

Yes I contacted the Keilder Partnership and there are 2 events one is in September as part of Kielder walking festival and the other is in October they are over the same distance (the Lakeside way) the first is more of a walk with some jogging a bit the second is more of a run with no doubt some walking a bit. Whichever you are doing the scenery is stunning.Have fun.

I did the Kielder evetn last year, as a run rather than a walk. It was actually 25 miles by my garmin and that of others that I asked, so presumably the Kielder marathon is going to add a bit. I guess it may start on the road as 1000 people will be tricky to fit all at once onto 6 foot wide paths

Should be good though, as the views are wonderful, as stated above

I am not sure if the Lakeside way was completed by last years event but it is now as we have an increasing number of guests coming to walk/run or cycle it.

Hi Joyce, it was completed as the event last September was to celebrate its completion. And I can vouch for it, having run every inch of it.

For those interested, the link below gives details of the Kielder walking event, with a photo montage showing the area and some of the surface that it is on. Even has me in it, but don't let that put you off.

Have walked and cycled round Kielder several times but would never dream of paying for the privillage. If the old Reiver familys were still around they would be rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of such easy pluckings. (maybe there are some old Reiver familys on the board of Northumbria Water).

What exactly are you trying to say about Northumbrians and Reivers in particular we live 5 miles inside England (Byrness) and my maiden name was Hedley.

P.S. if any of you are looking for accommodation for either the walk or run I wil happily rub my hands together and seperate you from your hard earned cash.

I live within sight of the border, I am married to a farmers daughter who lived on the Border and am proud to have walked most of the Debatable land, a land and people that I respect and love but I still think it's daylight robbery the prices that are charged for entry in to events round Kielder. If you want to enter an honest priced event check out the LDWA webb site.

P. S Had some good times at Byrness and never been rooked.
