A three-tonne digger has been airlifted onto the summit of Helvellyn in the Lake District to help repair seriously eroded paths in the area.

According to this story in today's Guardian, erosion scars in some places are up to eight metres wide and one metre deep. The repair programme is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Commission to the tune of over £1 million with some 145 paths earmarked for restoration in the Lakes.
