The International Porter Protection Group - IPPG - is holding a
fund-raising evening at the Royal Geopgraphical Society in November
featuring legendary mountaineer Doug Scott and Ben Ayers.
The purpose of the evening is 'to highlight the heroic
lives and cultures of Nepalese mountain porters' with proceeds
raised from the event aimed at benefitting the porters and their
communities.
It should be well worth attending with Doug Scott presenting a new
talk 'Ogre to Everest' which will 'recall the courage and comraderie
displayed by his porters during his epic expedition off the Ogre when
he broke both legs.' Scott, of course, is well known for his work
with local communities in the Himalaya - see links to previous OM
articles at the bottom of this page for an interview with the man
himself.
Ben Ayers, the founder of Porters Progress will be supplementing
Doug's lecture with a presentation on how the trekking community has
helped, and can help further, Nepal's porters.
The evening takes place on Tuesday 11 November at 7pm, venue is
the RGS in Kensington Gore. Tickets for the evening are
£10 with proceeds going to Porters Progress, Community
Action Nepal (Registered Charity No.1067772) and the Hopeful Home for
Helpless Children and Orphans, Kathmandu.
To order your tickets call 020 8870 2600, email uk@ippg.net
