Eight Injured In Snowdon Rescue

Eight MRT members hurt as they helped two walkers in dire conditions on Sunday night.

Eight mountain rescue team members were injured during an operation to help two stricken walkers on Snowdon on Sunday night with winds gusting up to 110mph making for horrendous conditions.

According to the BBC, the two walkers were blown off an icy path and suffered fractures in the process. The conditions meant that helicoper evacuation was impossible so the pair had to be walked off and roped down the mountain. High winds meant stretcher evacuation was impossible.

In the process, eight members of the four local recue teams involved suffered injuries including suspected broken ribs, damaged ankle ligaments and numerous cuts and bruises. Ian Henderson of Llanberis MRT warned walkers to take care on the mountain pointing out that while conditions are amenable in the valleys, ice and wind on higher ground make for an unforgiving environment.

It was pretty windy up there saturday, we came down in the dark ( had to try out the new petzl ultra) and got back to Pen y Pass as MR were meeting up to go up, we passed one group of 5 going up pyg track as we were coming down i think it was them that got stuck, still heading up at 3.30ish no crampons or axes, crazy

Really good conditions to play with crampons and axes on the ice, lots of fun  But a very busy few weeks for Mountain Resuce, tops guys!

We went up via Crib Goch on Friday. Conditions were great, although we noticed that the zig zags at the top of the Pig track looked nasty.

It was blowing a hoolie Saturday night even down at valley level. Wouldn't have relished being up there then
