Euro Mountaineers Are Fashion Victim Wimps

US site pans the gondala-hugging nancy boys of the Alps

Wahay! So who are the more serious outdoors people, Yanks or Europeans.

Well, according to the Gear Guy at outsidemag.com, Euros are a bunch of wimps who rely on gondalas to whisk them up mountains in the Alps and are never more than a few minutes away from a helicopter rescue if they feel like doing something stupid on the mountain...

Here's what he's got to say:

'As for your friend's remark about the "serious" Europeans, I think that's a crock. Serious as in, what, expecting a gondola ride halfway up the mountain, which is the case throughout the Alps? Or having your rescue insurance card in your pocket and knowing a helicopter is ten minutes away if you do something incredibly stupid?'

The icing on the cake is his quoting a Malden Mills representative as saying: 'Europeans are much more fashion-conscious, placing color and panache above function. Well, except for the Brits, who don't want to be seen in anything but dark blue.'

So there you go, European mountaineers are fashion victim, gondala wimps, presumably apart from us Brits who are just wimps.

And we say, hey Mr Gear Guy, get off your nice comfy sofa with your family-sized bag of potato chips and do some mountaineering in Scottish winter conditions then tell us where the flippin' gondala is...

So the 'Gear Guy' seems to reckon European mountains are a picnic, but what do you think?

pah! Bloody merkins. He's clearly basing his views on a 2-week trip to 'cham, or perhaps a weeks skiing...Or maybe he's just sulking because his lardy gut won't fit into a nice grey buffalo jacket :-)

Even in France, outside of the big skiing areas, gondolas are not that common - try going to the Ecrin, for example.
And then there's the mistaken belief that there are no mountains in Europe outside the Alps - if you want serious, how about some of those Norwegian big walls, or the various big & remote mountain ranges in Eastern Europe.

It's true that in terms of distance from the road-head, Scotland has a way to go before it beats Alaska, but in terms of grimness of weather it's not that far off, and all the helicopters in the world are precicely no use at all when it's blowing 100mph on the tops.

He does have a point that some of the 'continental' gear is a bit on the feeble side, but then exactly the same is true of lots of US kit. And as for the remark about not having clear-view windows in european tents...well, that just about says it all.( I don't need a window to see that it's still raining
:-)

What's this Brits and navy blue malarky?
I have loads of outdoor clothing and only 95 per cent is navy blue!!! The other 5 per cent being a very lively forest green!! Pass me the new season catalogues.
