If you're a regular outdoors news watcher, you'll almost certainly
have followed the extraordinary story of American climber Aron
Ralston, who amputated his own arm to escape after becoming trapped
by a boulder in a remote canyon.
A few weeks ago we brought you the news that Ralston's book,
'Between a Rock and a Hard Place' is due to be published in the UK
soon - see previous articles linked below - now, if you want to know
what to expect, Outsidemag.com has published an extended excerpt from
the book which makes extraordinary reading.
You can find it at www.outsidemag.com.
It's extraordinary stuff, made worse by you knowing what's going to
happen, with a nasty, visceral feel to it, here's the moment when the
boulder rolls onto his hand:
"The next three seconds play out in slow motion. The falling rock
smashes my left hand against the south wall; I yank my left arm back
as the rock ricochets in the confined space; the boulder then crushes
my right hand, thumb up, fingers extended; the rock slides another
foot down the wall with my arm in tow, tearing the skin off the
lateral side of my forearm. Then, silence."
Definitely worth a read if you have 20 minutes or so to spare.
