Family Reunion For Carneddau Mountains
OS maps to feature new name for Carnedd Uchaf
Carnedd Uchaf has been renamed Carnedd Gwenllian
After a long campaign by the Princess Gwenllian Society one
of the Welsh 3000ers is to have a name change. Three of the
Carneddau's mountains are already named after family members, with her
mother and uncle remembered along with her famous father Llewellyn ap
Grufydd. The re-naming ceremony took place last weekend, in a move
supported by the national Trust and the Snowdonia National park
Authority. Princess Gwenllian was captured after the battle that saw
her father die and Wales come under the authority of Edward I in 1282.
Following capture the Princess was taken to a monastry in Linconshire
where she lived for the next 54 years till her death.
New versions of Ordnance Survey maps will feature the new name, in a
rare move from the OS, but with the old name appearing in brackets to
avoid confusion. OS spokesman Paul Beauchamp said: "Any changes to the
map need to be carefully considered because they are relied on by the
emergency services and mountain rescue teams to help find stranded
climbers."As agreement has been reached, we are delighted to reflect
the name change and to be playing a role in reuniting Princess
Gwenllian with her father, mother and uncle among the mountain peaks of
her homeland."
