There was a lucky escape for five climbers in Scotland at the weekend after one fell down a snowy gully and dislodged four others.

Despite falling 'more than 500 feet' according to newspaper reports, all five survived without serious injury. The Daily Record says that the first faller was a French woman who was soloing Ben Lui's classic Central Gully and fell from near the top of the route.

As she slid, she collected two roped pairs - both Scottish - who were knocked from the mountain and also fell. A local mountain rescue team spokesman is quoted as saying: 'The climber who fell from the top has almost definitely been saved by those further down. They have effectively broken her fall as they were knocked off themselves.'

More details in the Daily Record and the Herald.
