Galen Rowell was a truly inspirational figure and his death is a great loss to the art of mountain photography. As a climber, writer and photographer he is unsurpassed - truly he attained the peaks of his art.
In the tradition of great American landscape and wilderness photography established by Ansel Adams, he created images that captured the vital essence of the outdoors, not only in America, but the world over, from the Himalaya to the poles. He will be sadly missed.
