The first ever 'Let's Go Geocaching' Festival takes place in
the Lakes this weekend, 12-14 May based at the YHA in
Borrowdale.
Geocaching, if you didn't know already, is a high tech treasure
hunt using Global Positioning System (GPS) units to track down
hidden, lunch box-sized caches that can contain anything from a small
prize to details of further challenges or, judging from this picture,
a small man with a camera...
The Lakes weekend is a chance for newcomers to the sport of all
ages to learn the basics and includes coaching workshops to explain
the technology involved and, it says here, 'teach participants basic
map and navigation skills'.
For more experienced Geocachers, there will be numerous Geotrails
including a Jennings Cumberland Ale Geotrail where free
beer is the prize :-)
You can also win more than £450 worth of GPS equipment and
mapping software in an accompanied Geotrail event.
The event is being held at the YHA Borrowdale on May 12-14
(Friday evening until Sunday evening). Weekend packages are available
at YHA Borrowdale by contacting them directly on 0870 7705707. The
package costs £125 and includes two nights full board and all
activities, which participants can attend at their choice.
You can also buy a day ticket for £29 per person including
lunch and all the day's activities and, if needed, arrange your own
accommodation via www.golakes.co.uk
or by calling the Cumbria Tourist Board booking line on 0808
1008848.
Day tickets, online booking and full details of the event are at
www.gpstraining.co.uk.
You can also find free Geotrails in the Lakes at their sister site
