Going For Gold With The LDWA

National Trails Register launches with certificates for completing trails

If ticking lists and certificates is your thing there's a new chance to add to your collection with the launch of a National Trails Register and a series of bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond certificates. The Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) has set up the register for people completing at least 5 of the 18 National Trails, with certificates at 5, 10, 15 and 18 completed. It's hoped that the certificate scheme will encourage walkers onto less frequently used Trails such as Glyndwr's Way and the North Yorkshire Wolds Path.

You don't have to be a member of the LDWA to get your name on the list, and you don't have to complete Trails in one go - you can do them in stages over as long as you want, and retrospective applications are also OK. The list will appear online at the LDWA website, with new entries also appearing in the organisation's magazine Strider.  The certificates will cost £2.50 each, and there's a series of badges planned for the future. To qualify for the Diamond Certificate you'll need to complete over 2800 - putting it into the realms of the classic American Triple Crown Trails. The first recipent, Allan Castle, completed the final Trail, The Speyside Way last week - 30 years after setting off on the South Downs Way.

A Register of those long distance walkers who have completed all of the National Trails  in England, Wales and Scotland

If people want to tick lists, follow waymarked trails (National or whatever), get badges and certificates for doing it, and get their name on some list for it then fine - if it floats their boat and gets them out there enjoying it, then all well and good for them.

But this from the introductory lines on the LDWA link above....

"LDWA members are, after all, long distance walkers and the highest accolade for British walkers must surely be to complete all of the principal long distance paths in their own country."

Where is this North Yorkshire Wolds Path you speak of?   Last time I was home the Yorkshire Wolds were mostly in the East Riding!
