Cleaning and proofing specialist Grangers is working with
Oxfam on a new scheme called Fabric4Life, which aims to
recycle used outdoor equipment and raise money for Oxfam projects in
the process.

The scheme, which will be rolled out to selected Oxfam stores
later this summer, will encourage walkers and climbers to donate
their surplus outdoor clothing to one of Oxfam's high street
shops.
Once received, the kit will be cleaned and reproofed when
necessary by Grangers, before being returned to Oxfam and put back
into stock for purchase. The thinking behind the scheme is that many
outdoor garments, waterproofs in particular, are replaced because
they no longer appear to work properly, however they can be returned
to their original performance with a good clean and reproof.
"People regularly replace outdoor gear, often because they think
their old garments don't work as they used to" says Don Gladstone,
Brand Director at Granger's.
"However they can't bring themselves to throw out old kit so
perfectly good garments get left in the cupboard. This new initiative
combines sustainability with raising money for charity. Cleaning and
re-proofing with Granger's restores garments to 'as-new' performance,
extending their useful life, while providing an income stream for
Oxfam."
Fabric4Life will be backed up with advertising and, in time, hopes
Grangers, will be extended to other charitable and commercial
partners with the aim of breathing new life into old garments. Good
stuff, watch this space for more details once the scheme goes
live.
