BBC Radio 4 is reporting that the Hadrian's Wall long distance
footpath is going to be closed over winter to allow it to
recover.
The Countryside Agency, reportedly says that the path which runs
the entire length of the wall has become too popular. You can hear
the Radio 4 bulletin in streaming audio on the Radio 4 web
site.
We haven't been able to find any confirmation elsewhere yet, but
we'll bring you more details when we have them. It seems unlikely
that the entire path will be closed for the winter. More information
on the path itself in previous OM articles below. Thanks to Alex Ford
for the tip.
Update - Oh No It Isn't...
According to the BBC web site, there are actually no plans to
close the path, instead, a Countryside Afency spokesman says:
'We are not closing the path in the winter, we are simply asking
people to respect the monument, respect the archaeology and just
think about when they visit the wall.'

Just heard on the radio that the new Hadrians Wall LDP is to be closed today as it is becomming too popular. With over 800 people per month completeing the route the countryside agency say that there is too much erosion and it is closing the path over the winter so it can recover. Can't find anything about it on the news websites yet though...
